Just beet it
I bought these beautiful beets at the The Stop Farmers’ Market last weekend. It’s our neighbourhood farmers’ market, just a couple of blocks from our house, at the Artscape Wychwood Barns – host to the Gluten Free Garage on November 11th!
I always look forward to our Saturday morning market ritual. Rob gets his freshly ground coffee and homestyle pickles, the girls get their goodies and sample their favourite cheeses, and I do the rounds, visiting my favourite
vendors and filling up my shopping bag. There is such incredible variety at this farmers’ market, definitely an inspiration to me for the Gluten Free Garage. But it’s always the fresh organic local produce that entices me most – so colourful, so alluring, so full of possibility.
Last Saturday it was these babies that caught my eye. (And the smell of fresh basil caught my nose.)
I thought of my friend Scott and his insanely delicious beet salad. Here is the recipe, with a few flourishes of my own. I guarantee, if you like beets you will love this salad (even Franny, our 4 year old, gobbled it up). I love beets and
I love Scott even more.
This summer I’ve fallen for fish tacos. Hook, line and sinker. I cannot get enough of them. And I’m not alone. It seems like the whole city is having a fish taco fling. Case in point: Many of Toronto’s hotspots feature the fish taco. Playa Cabana, Grand Electric, La Carnita are all serving up their own versions of this SoCal favourite. And so is Toronto’s very own gluten-free food truck, the Gourmet Bitches!
While there are plenty of fish tacos in the city, Supermarket’s version (pictured here) tips the scales…and THEY ARE GLUTEN FREE! (You have to specify that you want them gluten free. Supermarket has a gluten-free menu, be sure to ask for it.)
No matter how you slice it, watermelon is the ultimate summer treat.
Combine diced tomatoes, diced red onion and finely chopped jalapeno peppers (start with 2 and take it from there).
Oops! Forgot about the minced garlic.
Mash 6 large avocados. Add some freshly squeezed lime juice. Season with coarse salt and fresh ground pepper to taste.
Lovingly combine the “salsa” mix with the avocado.
Add a handful of chopped fresh cilanto. Mmmmm!
A shout-out to Robin Schaffran (aka Dr. Robin) for this guacamole recipe!
We’re huge fans of her fantastic all-natural skincare line for children, Dr. Robin for Kids. Sunscreen, daily moisture cream and body wash and shampoo—all gloriously gluten free! (And it’s not just for kids.)
Get thee to the Greek
If you’re lucky to find yourself at a cottage this summer, here is the perfect
salad for a leisurely lunch on the dock. It packs a little sweet, a little salty and a big punch of protein with tuna, chickpeas and feta. After her first mouthful,
Alison declared me “the queen of salads.” Now you can be queen, too.
