the Lady is a champ

Responding to customer demand, Lady York Foods adds more gluten-free products, both local and imported, to its shelves every week.

Lady York Foods sounds very proper and English but it’s anything but. A local, independent, Italian-owned grocer, Lady York caters to the continental tastes of its diverse Toronto neighbourhood with such a variety of high-end, largely Italian goods that shopping there becomes a process of discovery—just like shopping in a market in a Neapolitan piazza. The biggest surprise, however, is that Lady York is also THE place to shop for imported gluten-free goods. GF enthusiasts from across the city make the trip regularly to the corner of Dufferin Street and Glenbrook Avenue for what’s become a go-to for top-shelf, specialty gluten-free staples and snacks. Responding to customer demand, Lady York adds more gluten-free products, both imported and local, to its shelves every week.

“Lady York has the best selection of gluten-free products from Italy that I can’t find anywhere else,” says Mimi Green, who’s been baking and cooking gluten free for her family ever since her daughter was diagnosed with celiac disease nearly 20 years ago.

Lady York co-owner Gabriele Torchetti let us in on how this 55-year-old family-run Italian grocery store has become a champion for the gluten free.

When and why did you start carrying gluten-free products?
We got into the general “health/natural” category about 25 years ago, which naturally included a few gluten-free products, along with organic.

How big is the gluten-free category for your business today?
It has surpassed the organic category in our store and it’s continually getting bigger. We sell more than 70 different gluten-free products.

What are the most popular gluten-free products in the store?
Our bestsellers are the imported cookies and pasta. Our most popular imported brands are Farabella, Scotti, Viazzo, Sarchio, Palmisano and Lazzaroni.

Are most of your gluten-free items imported?
I would estimate that the breakdown is 50% imported and 50% local at the moment, with the imported products—mostly from Italy, where they are very gluten-free savvy—growing a little bit faster.

How do you source the best gluten-free products?
Our best resources are our customers and our gluten-free-designated sales representatives/brokers. We take customer requests seriously. We always try to bring in items that customers ask for because they almost always turn out to be bestsellers!

With these three gluten-free go-getters at the helm of the recently launched GlutenFreeSmartStore.com you know there’s got to be some good stuff in store! As women living with celiac disease and gluten intolerance, they’ve all been there, done that, so this is one trusted team. But what makes GFSS different from other gluten-free online stores? For starters, GFSS is the first gluten-free online store that is focused on and committed to offering healthy choices. The Gluten Free Garage shares the same goal for our pop-up marketplace, so we’re down with that! With so many unhealthy gluten-free food products available now it’s good to be able to separate the wheat from the chaff. (I know, that’s not the most fitting idiom for a gluten-free website!)

Kathy Smart and her GFSS team aim to connect consumers with, ahem, smarter, healthier gluten-free options. In fact, one unique spin on GFSS is the “Smart”-approved products section featuring items that meet Kathy Smart’s strict nutrition requirements. You’ll find products here that are packed with protein and fibre, free from soy and refined sugar and flours, and low carb/glycemic. Tammie Sarra says that shopping in the ‘Smart’-approved section is “like going shopping with Kathy Smart or with your trusted nutritionist.” (If you’ve met Kathy, just imagine how fun would it be to go shopping with her in real life!) Kathy’s own line of Smart Starts gluten-free products is also available on the site.

The growing list of 100+ gluten-free products—including bread, baked goods, protein bars, pasta, cereal and skincare—that GFSS offers are:

  • high quality
  • nutritious
  • safe (certified gluten free and manufactured in dedicated gluten-free facilities)

And many of the products are also:

  • allergen free (great for shoppers with multiple dietary needs)
  • organic
  • non-GMO
  • artisinal
  • environmentally friendly

With winter practically here, I for one am excited to have the option of having healthy gluten-free products delivered right to my door (shipping is available in Canada and the U.S.). With a click of my mouse, I can order some of my go-to gluten-free goods such as:

  • Giddy Yoyo’s cacao powder
  • Holy Crap’s Wild Chia and Mary Jane
  • enerjive’s Quinoa Skinny Rock Salt Crave Crackers
  • Italpasta’s fusilli and penne

Happy shopping!

it’s (a) live!

The new Live in Liberty Village

One hot day in the city, this little girl went to Live Market in Liberty Village.

And the sign said...

Little sister to Live Organic Food Bar on Dupont, the bright Liberty Village eatery is part cafe and part grab ‘n go, serving prepared items (salads, wraps, etc), food you can order at the counter (bowls, burritos, etc), bottles of fresh pressed juices, gourmet coffee and a selection of artisanal products—all vegan, organic and most importantly gluten free!

The girls were feeling the heat.

The girls took a seat while mama browsed.

It made our day that Augie's Gourmet Ice Pops were in the freezer. Juiciest popsicles ever!

Augie’s Gourmet Ice Pops are in the house! Some other faves include: Sweets from the Earth frozen cookie dough, Bunner’s Supersonic cookie, Stasis Preserves, RawFoodz salad dressing and Chocosol dark chocolate.

These wraps are a game changer!

Wrapper’s delight! We bought Live’s flax and corn tortillas for our breakfast burritos: scrambled egg and cheese with avocado.
